Goal Setting

"It’s not that I have already reached this goal or have already been perfected, but I pursue it, so that I may grab hold of it because Christ grabbed hold of me for just this purpose. Brothers and sisters, I myself don’t think I’ve reached it, but I do this one thing: I forget about the things behind me and reach out for the things ahead of me. The goal I pursue is the prize of God’s upward call in Christ Jesus."

-Philippians 3: 12-14 CEB

Goal setting is an important process that can help us grow in numerous ways. When we set goals we are motivated to accomplish something, or reach a new level in something. This could be a goal in academics like a grade on the STAR test or the SAT. Maybe your goal is in your sport like trying to beat your fastest time, or personal records. Goals help us decide what we want in the future, and gives us aspirations to get there. So if we set goals in aspects of life like school, sports, music, art, or work… Do we set goals for our faith?

Just like we practice an instrument we play to get better, so we practice our faith to get closer to God, and understand our beliefs. Now setting goals for our faith look a little different than beating a personal record in a swim meet, or getting a position on your dance team. Goals are not always about the accomplishments but about the effort and focus into something. We have to spend time and effort on our relationship with God. We have to seek after him whenever we can, and put him in the center of our lives. We never stop growing in our faith, and learning more about God.

That being said, how do you think your musical skills would be if you only practiced once a week? Our faith cannot only live on Sundays when it is easy to go to church, hear about God, and go back to daily life. We have to practice our faith throughout the week, and incorporate God into all aspects of life. This can sometimes be difficult because we live in a fast pace, busy world, that doesn’t often give you time (or energy) to think about your faith in every moment. When we pursue God over everything else in life we can make him the center of all that we do. This scripture is a great image of how we pursue God, and aim to be closer to Him. The author remind us that this goal is a lifelong pursuit, not a goal we can check off our list in a year or two. Aiming to be closer to God means setting aside time and energy to be with Him. It means finding time to pray even if it’s on the way to school, or while you’re running laps on the field. Goals are great in life to help us reach for the stars in whatever we do. When we aim to be closer to God, when we practice getting to know him, when we set Goals for our faith.. We can start to make sure God is what were truly reaching for.
