Church on the Moon

“All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, for dominion belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations. All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him— those who cannot keep themselves alive. Posterity will serve him;  future generations will be told about the Lord. They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it!”
Psalm 22: 27-31

People have always fantasized about the future. What will the technology be? What will cars look like? What is the world going to look like in 100 years? It’s fun to hypothesize about what could happen and what the world could be. For this reason, people have written books, TV shows, and a bunch of movies about future worlds. Even with all the movies, books, and shows about the future, I have noticed that there is one thing that is not always included.

What will the church be like? Now I don’t just mean imagining awesome cathedrals on the moon, or holographic pastors in our living room. I mean what will we as the church be like in 100 years?
I am sure this is a question that people have asked themselves for years. Do you think the disciples knew that the letters and books they were writing would become part of a book that would print millions of copies every year? Maybe they sat around and hypothesized about the Christians of the future? What people define as “the church” has changed a lot over the years. We have different denominations, different church building, different congregations, different struggles and distractions from God. Who knows what the church will look like in 100 years?

This verse from Psalms reminds us that in the midst of all the fantasizing about the future, there is one thing we know for sure. God will be there. Humans change, church changes, the world changes, but God does not change. God will always be there loving his people. God will always be sending His people out to show His love in the world. God will always be.

What I really like about this section from Psalms is the wording it uses in the last verse. It says, “future generations will be told about the Lord. They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it!” This is talking about how God’s people will tell the world about who God is. That we will tell everyone, even people who aren’t born yet about God’s word. That is a future that I can look forward to. So maybe one day I’ll see you at church on the moon, I heard the acoustics are great up there.
