Meditating on God
How happy is the man who does not follow the advice of the wicked or
take the path of sinners or join a group of mockers! Instead, his delight is in
the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.
– Psalm 1:1-2 (HCSB) –
TV shows, social media, news pages, advertisements, blogs,
friends, family, politicians, leaders, teachers, bosses, books, podcasts,
songs… We input large amounts of data into our brains every minute we are
awake. We hear people telling us to try this new thing, go back to the old
thing, think this way, don’t think that way, and here’s some tips for life.
Though we are used to the amount of information we take in daily, it’s
undeniable that it’s a huge amount of data for our brains. Sometimes, in the
midst of all the voices it can be challenging to know which voices to listen
to. Which voices are good or bad? Which voices are helpful or harmful?
Psalm 1 reminds us that we have a choice between choosing
right and wrong things in our lives. Though sometimes it can be challenging to
navigate all the different options and voices, this psalm reminds us to delight
in the Lord’s instruction first. This means as Christians we should go to
scripture and let that be the primary voice in our lives. This isn’t something we
just “have to” do, but going to scripture is something that gives us connection
to the voice of God. There is clarity and simplicity in momentarily casting
aside all the other voices and tuning into God’s voice through scripture.
Sometimes scripture can help you choose between right and
wrong. But often life doesn’t present us with right and wrong decisions, but
with right and right decisions like choosing between the color shirt to wear
today, which college to attend, or choosing between things to do on the
weekend. Yet even still when we focus on God’s voice, suddenly we have a
guideline and a way to filter the rest of the information that’s imputed into
our minds and help us navigate life day by day. Even with God’s voice as the
primary voice, it can still be hard to navigate all the information and
decisions life faces us with. Regardless, through time of prayer, journaling,
scripture reading, or however you commune with God, let God’s voice be the
loudest. At all times, listen to His voice for guidance and wisdom and remember
that simply spending time with God is the most important thing of all.
